LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky softball team opened its season with a 4-1 win over the Dayton Flyers on Thursday afternoon at John Cropp Stadium. With the win, Kentucky moves to 10-3 on the season, and extends its season-high tying win streak to five games. Abbey Cheek became the first player to record two triples in a single game since 2006 when Megan Cooper hit three against Kent State on Feb. 17, 2006. Cheek now has three triples in the last two games she has played at John Cropp Stadium, as she also notched a three-bagger in the NCAA Regional final against Illinois a season ago. In her John Cropp Stadium debut, Autumn Humes was sparkling, going 5.2 innings only allowing one unearned run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts to get her third win of the season to move to 3-0. Freshman Grace Baalman came in and got the save, the first of her career, going the final 1.1 innings, keeping the Flyers at bay. ukathletics.com/news/2018/3/1/softball-cheeks-triples-humes-strong-outing-gives-uk-home-opener-win.aspx

I love watching the gals play softball. I loved playing softball until I was 38 and still miss it. The Cats have some decent players on their teams every season. Looks like they're off to a good start this season.

I never thought I'd ever say this, but I wish I had taken up golf when I was a teenager instead of playing softball. Speaking of softball, I don't know how things are up your way, but this area used to be a hotbed for softball and now it's died out. I don't know how far from Corbin one would have to go to find a men's league. London, a town 14 miles to the north of Corbin, has a fast pitch league for teenage girls. Other than that it's limited to the girl's high school teams.

I played softball the whole time I lived in Kentucky and help start a softball league when I worked in Tennessee and finished playing softball after playing 3 years in Indiana. I too wish I had taken up golf at a young age instead of tennis, my right knee would have probably been in better shape.
