I suppose it is only human to start thinking about things that went on last year and what lies ahead in 2006. I thought I would cover some of last years memories and ask for comments on whatever catches your eye. Oh by the way, this is in no order at all.
A. To think that before the year 2005, my first thought when I heard the female name Katrina was of the 5th grader who was in my first class I taught when I was a school teacher. For now and forever more it will be associated with the most destructive natural disaster to hit our country in our lifetime! Before 2005 who would ever thought that a city like New Orleans could almost totally be wiped off the map?!?
B. The dominance of the New England Patriots. In an era when the experts thought there would never be another dynasty in the NFL, what they have accomplished is mind boggling! Winning 3 out of the last 4 Super Bowls is amazing! It truly speaks volumes to what can be achieved when no one really cares who gets the credit! Oh and if you have them counted out for sure for this year, you might should take a closer look!
C. USC rolling over previously unbeaten Oklahoma on the way to a second straight national championship! This team goes for an umprecedented 3rd in a row early in 2006, don't bet against them!
D. Lance Armstrong wins 7th consecutive Tour de France! Dominance of this nature in a team or individual sport may never be seen again!
E. Tiger Woods wins another Master golf championship! OK, he may not dominate his sport quite as much as Lance but he isn't far behind!
F. The Chicago White Sox win the World Series. Yes thats correct, the White Sox, and they did it convincingly!! Not in the dynasty mode, but very similar to the Patriots in the sense that the whole is a lot bigger then the sum of the parts!
G. Baseball steroid hearings on capitol hill. Can we really believe any of them now? Some are caught in lies others, dance around the questions as much as possible. What has become of America's past time?
H. Rangers pitcher Kenny Rogers attacks photographer! I still am looking for the answer on what he was thinking! Just another example of a star athlete thinking he is above the law!
I. UK loses in double overtime on attempt to make it to final four! Regardless of what some people might think and say, we were one rebound away, or one free throw, period! Who will ever be able to forget how Patrick's three pointer just seem to hang on the rim forever?
J. The absolute foolish allegations against Chuck Hayes brought on by someone seeking attention, fame, money and spotlight. Here's hoping that everyone learned something from that situation.
K. UNC wins NCAA title! I can't stand the program or the team, but this was a great array of talent! Hats off to Roy Williams for getting the monkey off his back!
L. Death of a pope, John Paul II dies. Whether you are his religion or not you must respect a man who spent so much of his life helping others and fighting for humanity. He will be missed worldwide!
M. Afleet Alex, it is not often in my adulthood that I can be moved to crying from watching televison, especially sports. I watched the pre derby story about the little girl Alex who had terminal cancer and started lemonade stands for cancer research. In her own words, "I don't want other little kids to have to go through everything I have." The strength in those words coming from this little girl, is more then I could ever hope to muster in a thousand lifetimes. Unfortunately little Alex lost her battle with cancer before she could see the horse named for her, run in her favorite race, the Kentucky Derby. Afleet Alex didn't win the derby but did win the Preakness and Belmont. For someone who had never heard of this horse or this little girl, just from that 10 minute pre derby story I will never, ever forget them!
N. Terrell Owens saga, hes a moron, enough said.
O. Donovan McNabb, I have a new found respect for the amount of class that he has!
P. The New Orleans/Baton Rouge/San Antonio Saints, you have to feel for these guys. They were up against it the entire year. I know it pales in comparison to what a lot of people in the area went through, but to have to compete in the NFL this year under their circumstances, my hat goes off to them!
Q. The return of hockey. Let me just say if there was never another hockey match it wouldn't hurt my feelings. To me all it does, is take up time on sprtscenter and make you wait through a lot of needless stats on the bottomline of ESPN2. But i do realize that a lot of people especially in the north and in Canada really like it, so good for them!
R. Spurs win another title! Tim Duncan was his usual brilliant self in leading the Spurs over the Pistons in a great series. It enabled Nazr to pick up a title in knocking off Taysaun in a battle of former UK greats!
S. REGGIE BUSH! Get used to the name. Barring major injury he will soon be one of the brightest stars in professional sports! This Bush guy can play!!
T. One can only hope that Texas-USC is as good as Notre Dame-USC was this year!! The Trojans kept their win streak alive as they scored in the last seconds!! One of the best college football games you can ever hope to see!!
U. JERRY RICE retires! OK, perhaps I am a little bias but he might be the greatest NFL player, ever!! Is that possible?
V. The Randolph Morris saga...It seemed like it would never end. Even when it appeared to end, it still had one more twist!! Lets hope that in 2006 this story pays big dividends for the Cats!!
W. 2005 also saw the passing of several celebrities and famous personalities among them were...
Johnny Carson- Several generations went to bed with Johny during his tenure
Johnny Cochran- Like him or not, the man was brilliant at what he did. Who can ever forget, "if it doesn't fit, you must acquit'?
Eddie Albert- Best known for among other things, Green Acres and being the warden in the original The Longest Yard!
Luther Vandross- A R&B music legend who passed on after fighting the effects of a stroke from a few years ago.
Peter Jennings - ABC's news anchor for two decades passed on after a battle with lung cancer.
Bob Denver- One very close to my heart. I grew up with the old reruns of Gilligan's Island and still to this day call my 6 year old my little buddy.
Pat Morita- I'm not sure whether he is more remembered for his role as Arnold on Happy Days or as Mr. Miagi on The Karate Kid?
Richard Pryor- He was one of the inspirations of my favorite comedian Eddie Murphy!
Well there are just a few things that went on in our world, I will put out at least one more of these before the ball falls on New Years Eve! I hope there is something in there somewhere that will start some conversation!!
