Monroe County lineman Billy Joe Murphy thought he might have a chance to earn a Division I college scholarship when Nebraska sent him an invitation to its summer camp following his freshman season.
However, he really knew big-time college football was a possibility after his sophomore season when he got a visit from new University of Kentucky assistant coach Chuck Smith. The 6-7, 265-pound Murphy knew Smith had led Boyle to five straight state titles and six consecutive state championship berths before joining Rich Brooks' staff at Kentucky.
