Former NBA coach Avery Johnson has reached an agreement in principle to coach the Alabama Crimson Tide, a source told CBSSports.com on Sunday afternoon. A formal announcement is expected soon. Alabama initially targeted Wichita State's Gregg Marshall to replace Anthony Grant. Johnson, 50, is currently an analyst for ESPN. He played in the NBA for 16 seasons, then coached the Mavericks and Nets. He was the 2006 NBA Coach of the Year. www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/25136830/alabama-hires-avery-johnsonThe fact he's never coached, on the collegiate level, would bother me if I was a Bama bb fan. Since Marshall opted to remain at WS, and Smart took the Texas job, I doubt if they could have found a proven college coach willing o take the job though.

Avery seems to be a likable coach, I've heard him speak several times. I know that doesn't mean anything because Frank Martin which coaches South Carolina and almost seems like a Bobby Knight clone, spoke in a interview I saw the other day and he seemed very likable. Anyway, maybe Bama has landed a coach that can give them a lift.
